During the years of World War
II, members of the Fifth Avenue Church of Christ, who lived in the
Crossroads community, found it difficult getting back and forth to
church. It was decided that they would attempt to establish a
congregation at Crossroads. With school consolidation, the former "Redmill"
school property was abandoned, and was offered for sale by sealed
bids. Gus Nichols, bid on the property. The bid was accepted.
Governor "Big Jim" Folsom stated that this bid was the best and
accepted it. Gus Nichols then transferred the property to the
following men as the first "Trustees" of the Crossroads Church of
Christ: Charlie Best, Sterling Edwards, J. E. Conway, and Judge
Meadows.
Sterling Edwards donated the lumber and on Saturday, December 24th,
1946, the building was erected. the next day, Sunday, Christmas
Day, the first service was held.
Among the first preachers, who held gospel meetings in the old
building, were Gus Nichols, J. G. Pounds, S. F. Hester, Albert Hill,
W. Gaddys Roy and Winfred Clarke.
The next building was constructed just to the left side of the first
building on Highway #5 in the early fifties.
As the congregation continued to grow, it was decided in 1982 to
purchase 7½ acres that became available approximately 1/3 of a mile
north on Highway #5 on the East Side of the highway. In 1990, on
the front of this property, a commodious building was erected. The
auditorium will seat 488 people, with 11 classrooms and offices, and
other needed facilities.
The first full time preacher were James Wolf. Former ministers
were Marlin Graves, Lacy
Taylor, Sam Soper, C. Q. Alexander, Benny Hester, Scott Webster and
now Dale Hubbert became Crossroad's minister.
